Flood Control District Infrastructure and Community Services Divisions step up Tornado Debris clean up

As many Harris County residents heard and felt the impact of the January 24 storm system that swept through the Houston area, causing a tornado to touchdown in east Harris County, the Harris County Flood Control District's Infrastructure, Maintenance Engineering and Community Service divisions suited-up in the storm’s wake to conduct damage assessments and perform clean-up activities.

The Work Continues

Construction continues on the Smith Road Channel Diversion Project in Northeast Harris County.  The project will reduce the potential for future erosion along Greens Bayou Tributary P133-00-00 to improve the drainage along Smith Road and also benefit the Fall Creek subdivision. The less erosion, the greater the stormwater conveyance capacity of the tributary to reduce the risk of flooding for structures in the area.

The purpose of the High Five Program is to recognize employees at all levels (contractors and senior leadership, too) for their day-to-day efforts that contribute to getting the job done. This program allows Flood Control District employees to recognize one another for their exemplary work. Whether it's a big project that took extra time or a small effort that saved the day, employees can complete a High Five to spread good will and reward good work.

How long have you been with the Flood Control District?

I started in January 2023.

What does your job at the Flood Control District entail?

My job entails developing engaging content for the Flood Control District’s social media platforms, attending events, and maintaining our brand across all social media platforms. I also coordinate with our Project Communications Team to better communicate the status and benefits of the Flood Control District’s projects around Harris County.

What is your favorite thing about working at the Flood Control District?

My favorite thing about working for the Flood Control District would be the work culture. Government agencies are known for being solitary and cold. I have found the Flood Control District to have a great working environment. Everyone here is really dedicated to providing the best to Harris County through its various projects.

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

The coolest thing I am currently working on is a social media campaign that will educate our public on the importance of the Flood Control District. The Flood Control District does so much for the people of Harris County, and I’m really looking forward to telling the stories that will bring attention to that fact.

What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

The best career lesson I’ve learned so far has been to never stop learning. There will always be people in your field who have more experience and learning from them will help you grow and make you an expert so one day someone else can learn from you. The key to driving forward in your career is to not constantly compare yourself to those around you: instead of seeing the differences between you and your coworkers, see working with them as an opportunity to become better at your craft.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you so far this week?

The best thing that has happened to me this week has been that I was able to be better than last week at my job. As a professional, I am always looking for ways to improve and become better positioned in my field. I always jump on opportunities to expand my skill set and my experience, and that also benefits both the public and Harris County Flood Control District.

What is something about yourself that most people don't know?

What most people do not know about me is that I love the color pink. It’s not exactly something that regularly comes up in casual conversation around the office. Lol.

What is something about you that people would be surprised to know?

What most people find surprising is that I have 4 kids.

What was your first job?

My first job was at Burger King as a cashier. It’s a far cry from what I’m doing right now, so I would say that I have come a long way since then.

What do you like most about your job?

What I love most about my job is that it is fun and exciting. My job allows me to work with the things that I love: technology, social media, public relations, etc. It’s also a job where I actually get to use the degree that I went to school for. That is the type of job I have always wanted.

What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

What motivates me to get up and go to work is my children. I want them to see me as an example.
