Press conference held to celebrate funding for the T.C. Jester Stormwater Detention Basin
State Representative Sam Harless hosted a press conference to celebrate secured state and federal funding for the T.C. Jester Stormwater Detention Basin in the Cypress Creek watershed. He was joined by U.S. Congressman Dan Crenshaw, Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey and Flood Control District Executive Director Dr. Tina Petersen for the event.
Industry Day showcases projects to potential contractors
In early September, the Flood Control District team hosted an Industry Day event to share information on upcoming opportunities associated with the Community Block Development Grant (CDBG) programs with the consultant and contracting communities. The Flood Control District will be soliciting proposals for support of flood risk reduction efforts funded through the CDBG Disaster Recovery and Mitigation Programs.
Several hundred contractors and consultants attended the event and heard from the Texas General Land Office, Harris County Purchasing Department, Harris County Engineering Department, Harris County Department of Economic Equity and Opportunity, and the Community Services Department.

Turkey Gully Press Conference held to announce new project
Dr. Petersen joined Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin (District C), and City of Houston Public Works Director Carol Haddock for a press conference to announce funding for a flood mitigation project along Turkey Gully.

Jesal Shah speaks to contractors at AGC Luncheon
Jesal Shah, the Flood Control District’s Chief of Project Delivery, attended the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Houston Luncheon last month. His presentation provided an overview of the current activities of the Flood Control District and upcoming opportunities for the contracting community. AGC Houston was established in 1923 and works to support the commercial construction industry in the Greater Houston region.
Dr. Petersen speaks on panel about flooding solutions in Harris County
Dr. Petersen joined speakers from the Texas Water Development Board and the San Jacinto Regional Flood Planning Group 6 as a panelist at the North Houston Association’s (NHA) Annual Flood Control Breakfast Event. The discussion covered a range of topics on flooding solutions in Harris County and the Houston region.
The North Houston Association advocates and supports projects and initiatives that advance the business environment and improve the quality of life in north Harris and Montgomery counties.
Construction Completed!
Crews recently completed construction on the second phase of a stormwater detention basin in the Sims Bayou watershed. This project will provide approximately 94 acre-feet of stormwater detention storage, or the equivalent of 31 million gallons of stormwater.

The West Houston Association recently held its Annual Flood Control Forum. Dr. Petersen was pleased to be one of the panelists for this year’s event. Dr. Petersen gave an update on current projects in the West Houston area and addressed questions surrounding funding for flood risk reduction efforts.
