Flood Control District goes on tour with delegates from Ghana

The Harris County Flood Control District recently announced a strategic restructuring of the organization to bolster operational efficiency and enhance community engagement. The restructuring includes the creation of new executive leadership roles and the redefinition of certain departments and divisions.

Harris County Flood Control District's Executive Director Dr. Tina Petersen had the privilege of meeting with Ghana’s Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of Housing and Works Honorable Francis Asenso-Boakye and his staff to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the collaboration and information sharing regarding flood risk reduction solutions, flood resiliency and mitigation strategies.
The dignitaries from Ghana were treated to a tour of completed projects in the Brays Bayou watershed as examples of what the Harris County Flood Control District has achieved in terms of helping to mitigate flooding in Harris County. Presentation sessions about the Flood Control District were also held in order to provide briefings on its vision and current projects. The tour ended with discussions on how Ghana might employ similar strategies to help mitigate flooding in their respective region.

Flood Control District hosts diplomats from Morocco
On May 31, the Harris County Flood Control District hosted diplomats from Morocco, as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program coordinated through Global Austin. Flood Control District staff shared information regarding best practices in emergency preparedness, management, planning, and coordination among federal, state, and local government. Discussions included reviewing lessons learned from Hurricane Harvey and an overview on current flood damage reduction projects.
Stormwater Detention Basin completed in Reverend William and Audrey Lawson Park
Dr. Petersen participated in Harris County Precinct 1’s ribbon cutting event with county leaders and the Lawson family to celebrate the substantial completion of the Stormwater Detention Basin at the Reverend William and Audrey Lawson Park. Formerly known as the Dagg Stormwater Detention Basin, the basin is located east of Cullen Boulevard, between Dagg Road and Christia V. Adair Park. Occupying approximately 22 acres of land at the site of a former sand pit purchased by the Flood Control District in 2017, construction began in spring 2020 and was substantially completed in fall 2022.
